A week ago, I dug up a black walnut root at the corner of Elm Street and Burnside.
In order to remove it, I needed to break it up into six or seven chunks that I could manage to roll up a couple of boards into the back of my truck.
I’d wanted to harvest this root for several years after having such good luck making carvings from this tree. A sampling of sculptures from this walnut tree:
Peace, 2015. Painted walnut wood, 36 x 11 x 5 inches. Private collection, Boston, Massachusetts
Thou wast not born for death immortal Bird!, 2015. Walnut wood, 36 x 10 x 6 inches. Collection of Amelia Kaymen and Eric Yopes, San Francisco, California
Shaman Drummer, 2015. Walnut wood, 28 x 12 x 8 inches. Collection of Phyllis Klein and Alex Mayer, Washington, D.C.
Let us hire such sacred fools & Fill up the well with snow together, 2022. Painted walnut wood w/oak, copper and epoxy attachments, 18 x 9 x 8 inches. Collection of David Nicholson, Vienna, Virginia
Oración del Remanso, 2022. Walnut wood, 14 x 8 x 6 inches. Collection of Christine Losq, Palo Alto, California
blue bikini, 2022. Painted walnut wood, 21 x 7 x 7 inches. Collection of the Artist.
All from the same tree!
And finally, yesterday we mounted the new weathervane at Renee and Steve’s farm estate in Kinderhook. I think her nickname is Gabriella.
